The Blacksmith’s Homestead
This homestead consists of the forge from Gügleben (Ilm District) and the stable barn from Reinsfeld (Ilm District).
In the past, every village had its own blacksmith. Blacksmiths were responsible for shoeing cows and horses, as well as for manufacturing and repairing iron items such as hoes, door fittings, and tools.
Our forge was built by Bernhard Übrig in 1840 at the eastern edge of the village using half-timbered construction. The smithy workshop and living quarters are located under one roof. On the east side of the building, a shoeing hall was added.
The forge is fully functional, and on several days throughout the year, traditional blacksmithing demonstrations take place.
The small stable barn is multi-purpose in design: on the lower level are a carriage shed and several pigsties. The upper floor, which can be reached via an external gallery, once contained storage rooms.
