Our Friends’ Association
Preserving history together – shaping the future
Since its founding on 1 December 2008, the Friends’ Association of the Thuringian Open-Air Museum Hohenfelden e.V. has been supporting the museum in many different ways. Our main goal is to help preserve unique testimonies of Thuringia’s rural history and culture and make them accessible to visitors of all ages.
The development plan of the museum foresees a gradual expansion in the coming years. The aim is to present the most complete possible picture of rural life in Thuringia — including the diversity of its architecture and housing, its traditional crafts, and agriculture. There is still much to do! However, our open-air museum cannot accomplish this mission alone.
Do you want to help preserve history?
Do you enjoy meeting like-minded people?
Then the Friends’ Association of the Thuringian Open-Air Museum Hohenfelden (Förderverein Thüringer Freilichtmuseum Hohenfelden e.V.) is just the right place for you.
Projects
Through the activities, contributions, and donations of our members and supporters, we help fund and realize:
- the reconstruction of historic buildings
- permanent and special exhibitions
- the printing of publications
- projects such as the construction of the playground
- the purchase of audio guides
- the maintenance of our historic trees, gardens, and grounds
- the support of museum festivals
Thanks to the civic commitment of our members, we have, for example, been able to save the oldest post mill in Thuringia and preserve one of the last half-timbered Umgebinde houses (House Langenbuch) from destruction.
We also care deeply about our museum animals – our two donkeys, rooster and hens, as well as the recently added rocking and climbing animals on our museum playground. With your support, there may soon be even more!
By the way: In recognition of its broad commitment, our Friends’ Association was awarded the Weimarer Land Homeland Prize on May 22, 2019, as part of the District Heritage Day.

Giving and Bequeathing
Who hasn’t heard the question: “What would you like for your birthday?”
If you would like to ask for a donation instead of gifts, you are helping us twice: you collect funds for the Friends’ Association, which invests them in museum projects, and you make our museum better known among your family and friends.
Direct Donation
Please provide the bank details and agree with us on a keyword, which your guests should include in the transfer.
Around four weeks after your celebration, you will receive a list of all donors who used the keyword, along with the total amount raised.
Each donor will receive a thank-you letter and a donation receipt.

Bequests and Legacies
If you would like to support the Open-Air Museum Hohenfelden beyond your lifetime, you should take action during your lifetime.
If you have no legal heirs, your estate will go to the state treasury and be used for general state purposes.
To ensure your final wishes are fulfilled, it is advisable to draw up a will or inheritance contract, which specifies who will receive what portion of your estate. In it, you can also include the Friends’ Association as a beneficiary.
However, objects and artifacts should not be bequeathed, as the museum already holds a large and diverse collection.
If you need further information or assistance (non-legal advice) in preparing a will in favor of the museum, we are happy to assist you.
