About Us

The Thuringian Open-Air Museum Hohenfelden introduces itself

The Thuringian Open-Air Museum Hohenfelden is the largest open-air museum in the Free State of Thuringia. A visit to our two sites – "Am Eichenberg” and the museum buildings in the village of Hohenfelden – offers you the chance to experience how people once lived, worked, and resided.

Our oldest building has witnessed nearly 500 years of Thuringian history. Your journey through time will also take you into other centuries, reaching as far as the 1960s. More than 40 buildings are waiting to be discovered by you.

The Eichenberg

At Eichenberg you will find large and small houses from various regions of Thuringia. These buildings could not be preserved at their original sites. Therefore, we carefully dismantled, restored, and reconstructed them here. Among them are the stately farmhouse of the Hoyer family, a small shepherd’s house, and Thuringia’s oldest post mill. The houses are surrounded by gardens, orchards, and pastures.

In the Village of Hohenfelden

In the village of Hohenfelden, the buildings have been restored in their original locations. Here you can visit, among other things, the old school and one of the last preserved brewhouses in Thuringia.

On certain days, museum festivals, historical tours, and craft demonstrations bring the past vividly back to life.

The Thuringian Open-Air Museum is under the sponsorship of the Weimarer Land district and is supported by the Association of Friends of the Thuringian Open-Air Museum Hohenfelden e.V.
