On the first Saturday in August, the Thuringian Sheep Breeders’ Association and the Thuringian Open-Air Museum Hohenfelden invite you to the 33rd Thuringian Shepherds’ Day in Hohenfelden. On the museum grounds “Am Eichenberg,” visitors can look forward to a colorful program for both young and old.

At 9:00 a.m., the Thuringian Shepherds’ Championship begins. The defending champion will be challenged by the winners of the regional competitions.

The shepherds must, together with their own dogs and a foreign flock, complete various herding tasks similar to those in everyday shepherd life – for example, penning and unpenning the sheep or driving the flock across a bridge. A jury of experienced shepherds evaluates the skills of both handlers and dogs. The award ceremony will take place at around 3:30 p.m.

A diverse supporting program focused on sheep and wool accompanies the championship. Around 20 spinners will compete to see who can spin the longest thread. In an animal exhibition, visitors can discover Thuringian sheep and goat breeds, some of which they may not have seen before. Sheep shearing will be demonstrated using both hand shears and electric clippers.

You can also purchase a wide range of sheep-related products – from sheepskins and warm wool socks to colorful wool artworks. In addition, specialties such as sheep salami, sheep’s cheese, and other regional delicacies from Thuringia will be offered.
