Offers for Children’s Groups and School Classes

Learn, marvel, and join in

From March to October, we offer special programs for children’s groups and school classes. Depending on age and areas of interest, different parts of the museum can be explored as part of a guided children’s tour.

For primary school groups, our hands-on children’s tours allow the kids to become actively involved in various topics.

All offers must be booked in advance!

For groups of fewer than 10 children, a flat fee of €30.00 will be charged.

Children’s Guided Tour

During a joint walk through the museum grounds “Am Eichenberg”, there is much to discover and experience about life in Thuringian villages in earlier times.

The children will learn what a “black kitchen” is, where people used to wash and go to the toilet, and how everyday life and work were organized in the past.

The children’s tour lasts around 60 minutes and is designed for children aged 6 to 12. Each group is limited to 10 to 15 participants.
Fee: €30.00 per group, plus a reduced admission of €2.00 per child.

Children’s Hands-On Tour

During a short introductory tour of the museum grounds, children will learn the essentials about the open-air museum and gain insights into the daily lives of children in the past. Afterwards, they can actively take part and try out important tasks from earlier times themselves.

Each part of the program lasts about 45 minutes.
The full tour takes around 90 minutes and is limited to 15 children per group.

Costs: €3.00 per child (project fee), plus €2.00 reduced admission per child/accompanying person.
For groups of fewer than 10 children, a flat fee of €30.00 will be charged.

Topics of the Hands-On Tour

Farming & Nutrition

Where does grain come from? How is it turned into flour? After visiting the post mill from Großmehlra, the children can weigh grain, clean it with the “wind fan,” and grind it by hand. Grab the handle and off you go!

Milk & Butter

Did every family once have cows? Where were they kept? Where does milk come from and what can be made from it? Here, the children also get to try milking and churning butter. As a reward for their efforts, they can enjoy bread with freshly made butter. Shake those jars and go!

Building & Craftsmanship

Most of the buildings at Eichenberg are half-timbered houses. But what does that mean? How is such a house built, and what materials are needed? The children will learn while building their own small half-timbered house. Ready, set, build!

Wash Day at the Museum

How was laundry washed before washing machines existed? Where and how often was it done? Here the children can find out – and scrub clothes clean at the washboard with soap and water. Roll up your sleeves and start scrubbing!

Old Games

How did grandma play when she was little? What kinds of games were popular in the past? The children can try them out – from walking on stilts to sack races. Let the games begin!

One-Room School

One room, one teacher, four grades at the same time – how could that work? How did children write without pens and paper? What is “Sütterlin script”? These and other questions will be answered during a lesson in Hohenfelden’s historic schoolhouse.

The hands-on school tour lasts about 90 minutes and is limited to 25 children per group.

Costs: €3.00 per child (project fee), plus €2.00 reduced admission per child/accompanying person.
